Known Issues & Caveats

Some elements of this guide are not without their risks, which are explained below. Weight these up first and decide if this is for you and an appropriate course of action.

Issues regarding the Space Anomaly portal

Right now, there exists a critical bug that might delete your freighter if you use the portal in the Space Anomaly to travel between bases.

Please ensure you back up your save before proceeding through the Space Anomaly portal.

Management of Base Computers

Rename your base computers appropriately so you know which bases are in which galaxies.

If you need to travel to bases local to your current galaxy, it's safer to use the portal onboard Space Stations.

The deletion of your last remaining base computer in any given galaxy will remove your ability to travel that galaxy from the Space Anomaly portal.

In the unfortunate or unlikely event that this happens, you could try using the alternative methods described in the 'Onward travel & Backtracking' section of the guide.

Save file restoration

In the event of save data loss or corruption, you can always restore your save file. This will normally be located at:

  • …AppDataRoamingHelloGamesNMSst_(userid)

Where (userid) is your Steam 64 bit user ID.

Insert %appdata% in to the address of the file browser to quickly navigate to the root of the AppData folder.

Basic Definitions

This is the meat of the guide. First of all, the difference between galaxies and star systems needs to be distinguished, as there can be confusion between the two.

In short, galaxies and star systems are not the same.

Star Systems

Star systems defined as the individual destinations that appear in the galactic map. Previously visited star systems are outlined with a circle. They have the following unique properties:

Spectral class

Determines the number of planets and their formation. This information will appear as orbit rings when the selected system has been visited.

Region

No effect on gameplay.

Star colour

Yellow systems are available to travel to immediately from the get-go, once a hyperdrive is acquired. Red, green and blue systems require the installation of the respective hyperdrive upgrade. The star colour of a system also determines the availability of the type of stellar metal.

Economy type

Determines the availability of trade goods. There exists two main trade loops, where one economy type feeds in to the other. An Economy Scanner is required if you wish to see this information about systems you haven't yet visited.

Economy performance

Determines, quantity and quality of trade goods. Determines the exchange rate between trade goods and units received. Also determines the appearance of rare, S-class ships. S-class ships do not appear in systems with bad economies. An Economy Scanner is required if you wish to see this information about systems you haven't yet visited.

Conflict level

Determines The likelihood of a random encounter with pirates. A Conflict Scanner is required if you wish to see this information about systems you haven't yet visited.

Dominant race

Determines the availability of ship types and upgrade modules as each race has their specialty. Non-yellow systems may be uncharted and have no dominant race. This will imply that the space station that is either infested/corrupted or absent entirely.

Galaxies

Galaxies are the umbrella that all star systems fall under. There are 255 galaxies in sequence to explore. Galaxies are shaped much like a takeaway pizza box and are approximately some 1,638,000 light years across from edge to edge. They all have countless star systems. They have the following unique properties:

Core colour

No effect on gameplay.

Sequence

New games will always start in galaxy #1; Euclid, a normal-type galaxy.

Type

Of which there are four unique classifications: Normal, Harsh, Lush, & Empty.

Yellow star systems in harsh-type galaxies are likely to have more planets with hazardous environments, extreme weather conditions, predatory creatures, and/or aggressive sentinels. The first in sequence being galaxy #3; Calypso.

Yellow star systems in empty-type galaxies are likely to have more dead planets. The first in sequence being galaxy #7; Budullangr.

Yellow star systems in lush-type galaxies are likely to have more Earth-like planets free from extreme weather conditions, predatory creatures, and/or aggressive sentinels. The first in sequence being galaxy #10; Eissentam.

Progression

Now that the basic definitions are out of the way, it's time to go in to detail regarding the methods available in which you can progress to new galaxies.

Arrival in a new galaxy

Travelling to a new galaxy that you have not yet visited causes damage to most of your technology. You will need to take along with you sufficient essential resources needed to carry out repairs upon your arrival.

Path to the Galactic Core

This method will advance you to the next galaxy in sequence (in this example, your current galaxy + 1). Remember that there are 255 galaxies in sequence to explore.

Before proceeding, it is advised that you first place a base computer down on any planet in the event that you wish to travel back to your current galaxy, otherwise it is a one-way trip.

For example,If you are in Euclid (#1), this method will advance you to Hilbert Dimension (#2).

To travel to galaxy #255 (Iousongola) using this method will take a lot of time, effort, and warp cells. Please note that travelling to the galactic core and advancing from Iousongola (#255) will wrap you back around to Euclid (#1).

Get in your ship, fly to space and open the Galactic Map. Select Galactic Core from the list of destination. A yellow path should now appear in the map tracing out in to the distance, taking in local star systems along the way. Warp as far as your hyperdrive allows. Rinse and repeat until you get there. This will eat up several hours and warp cells.

For a faster journey, consider the following:

  • Use an S-class Explorer-type ship with a fully upgraded hyperdrive (3 x S-class hyperdrive modules in alignment).

  • Use an S-class Freighter with a fully upgraded hypedrive (As above, but with Freighter Warp Reactor Sigma, Tau, & Theta).

Upon warping to the galactic core, you will travel to the next galaxy in sequence. Please remember that unless you left a base computer behind, this will be a one-way trip.

Completion of the Artemis Path (story mode)

This method will advance you to a galaxy of your choosing, this method also requires you to see the Artemis Path through to completion.

Before proceeding, it is advised that you first place a base computer down on any planet in the event that you wish to travel back to your current galaxy, otherwise it is a one-way trip.

Once you have reached the mission 'The Purge', you will need to warp to any system at least 16 times where you will learn a new portal glyph after each warp. After the 16th warp, you must travel to the marked location and activate the portal.

Once you enter the portal, you will be transported to an exotic planet and will have the opportunity to explore for a brief moment, before being transported to an Atlas Interface.

Upon interaction with the Atlas Interface and to keep spoilers to a minimum, you must cry out six times in a row and then you must choose to reset the simulation and not refuse The Atlas.

You will be presented with four pedestals all labelled 'THE CREATION', each with a hologram of a galaxy on them. Upon interaction, there will be a narrative dialogue followed by a choice to reset the simulation in to the selected galaxy.

The choices are as follows:

  • Cyan/Teal galaxy: Transports you to a Normal-type galaxy.
  • Red galaxy: Transports you to a Harsh-type galaxy.
  • Green galaxy: Transports you to a Lush-type galaxy.
  • Navy Blue galaxy: Transports you to an Empty-type galaxy.

Upon choosing a galaxy, please remember that unless you left a base computer behind, this will be a one-way trip.

Onward travel & Backtracking

In this section, the methods to achieve backward and forward travel between already visited galaxies will be explained.

Primary methods

Via the Space Anomaly portal

There are currently risks in using the Space Anomaly portal. Please see the section titled 'Known Issues & Caveats' before proceeding.

The portal in the Space Anomaly will allow you to travel to the bases that exist in previously visited galaxies. This method will always be available providing those base computers still exist. The portal will also allow you to travel to bases belonging to other players.

Please note that as of 27th August 2019, the menu does not yet display image previews of each base.

Other players may have bases located in a galaxy you have not yet visited. Be sure to set up a base computer while in their galaxy if this is the case, so you can go back there via the Space Anomaly portal.

Secondary methods

Via nexus mission fireteams

When leaving the Anomaly after joining a group to complete a nexus mission, you may be warped to a galaxy you have not yet visited providing that the host of the mission has a base there.

Be sure to set up a base computer while in their galaxy if this is the case, so you can go back there via the Space Anomaly portal.

Via ambient multiplayer

If a Steam friend is in a galaxy you have not yet visited, you will be taken there when you join their lobby/group. Be sure to set up a base computer while in their galaxy if this is the case, so you can go back there via the Space Anomaly portal.

Save editing

Right now, there is nothing Hello Games can do to stop you from using a save editor to change what galaxy your save file is in. This method requires the use of third-party tools, and some may consider it to be cheating. However, this is both open to debate and entirely subjective. Please be sure to back up your save file first.
